GRACIE
There’s
a saying that’s heard quite often in the world of Great Dane owners,
breeders, rescue groups, and Dane showing enthusiasts; “Danes are
like potato chips – You can’t have just one!” Soon after Rudy began
his work with the children of Grandfather Home, both his personal
and therapy canine family began to grow!
|
This
beautiful Brindle pup was born on 6/7/05 and went home to live with
Rudy, Gabi, and Laura in early August 2005. Even as a tiny pup,
Grace was full of a special kind of sparkle and attitude . . . so
much so, that her breeder placed Grace with Rudy knowing she would
be shaped and influenced by the greatness of Rudy's heart and
temperament, just as Gabi was. She very quickly came to adore her
big brothers Rudy and Gabi! She learned all about going for her
first walks in the "big world” by sticking close to Rudy's side.
Grace - or Gracie as the boys call her - is a little
ball of fire and spirit. Registered as "Grace Like Rain", Grace is
from the same line as Gabi; her sire, also being out of "Connor"
breeding. She and Gabi are actually half-cousins!
Responding to Gabi as if he is her littermate at times,
and an adored big brother at other times, little Gracie has learned
Gabi's favorite trick and prances around campus with a big stuffed
toy in her mouth. And like Gabi, she constantly glances around to
see whose heart she has melted! - Laura
Grace set her puppy heart on reaching out to a group of
tough, delinquent, abused teenage boys. And as she dances, wiggles
and flirts with them, looking each boy straight in the eye, she
draws these big tough boys to their knees to hug her, and kiss her,
and talk to her before they move on with their school activities.
Some thoughts on Grace from students and staff:
Grace is a consistent positive influence on our
adolescent gentlemen. I often use her as a bridge to a positive
place for a child in crisis. Outbursts are few when Grace is near.
She is as much a working staff member as we humans. Grace models
what is calm and normal, and thus is an educator in social skills.
Our students care for her on all levels and respect her value. This
is the right stuff. She belongs here now and in the future.” -
Ed Henderson, Grandfather Academy teacher
From some of Gracie’s boys:
• Grace is a wonderful dog. She helps me feel safe
and comfortable. She can help me with talking, she is always there
to hear and don’t seem to think different about me. She can mean a
lot and she should always have a safe environment where she is.
• I think that Grace is a really good dog. Even
though I have not been with her that much, I really like her. I
think that she helps a lot in our classroom when we are upset. She
is a good dog.
• Gracie is a very sweet funny little dog and she
also is very kind to other animals. She is cute and cuddly. I like
her. She is really supportive and loving.
• I love Grace because she is cute and nice and all
around my little cuteness. I love her and she is a nice dog.
• I really love Grace because she does not let you
feel bad and she focuses on us and lets you know that she is there
to help you when you are feeling down.
