BAILEY
There’s
a saying that’s heard quite often in the world of Great Dane owners,
breeders, rescue groups, and Dane showing enthusiasts; “Danes are
like potato chips – You can’t have just one!” Soon after Rudy began
his work with the children of Grandfather Home, both his personal
and therapy canine family began to grow!
|
Bailey was one of the Dane pups in the litter fostered by the kids
and staff of Grandfather Home in early 2005, and was adopted by
Grandfather Home staff member, Ginger G.
Being the runt of the litter and not expected to
survive, sweet Bailey had a tough start in life. The Mother dog
could not produce any milk for her litter of 11 puppies. All but 4
of the puppies died before the owner found help for them. At just 2
days old, Bailey and her littermates came into the care of the NC
Chapter of the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League. (MAGDRL)
MAGDRL foster Mom, Michelle Fitzgerald, welcomed the
pups into her home in February 2005. Michelle and her entire family
cared for the puppies around the clock, bottle feeding them every 2
hours, and doing everything a mother dog does for her pups. It was
an incredibly demanding task, but one that the Fitzgerald family
were well prepared for.
Michelle is famous for her work with “hard case” Great
Danes. She regularly fosters dogs with multiple medical conditions,
along with her extensive work with deaf and blind Danes.
From Michelle: 3/25/05
“A wonderful woman named Kelly E. with Grandfather
Home for Children, will be the foster mother to our four babies and
the children will interact with them, as well as being responsible
for much of their care. Laura Hickey and Kelly made the trip on
Saturday and whisked the pups away to begin a wonderful new chapter
in their lives.
It was sad for me and my family to see the puppies go
as we have taken care of them since they were 2 days old. But we all
knew as we watched them drive away that this was best for the
puppies and would be just fantastic for the children!
They were a lot of work but each one of them found
their way into our hearts and made life a little brighter every day.
Thank you Laura, Kelly, and the children for opening up your hearts
to our four little orphans.”
From Ginger - Bailey’s adoptive Mom:
“I adopted Bailey in May of 2005 and boy did I take
on more than I could have ever imagined! Bailey was the runt of the
litter and was not expected to live. She is still quite small for
her age and may honestly be as big as she is going to get at this
point. Bailey weighs between 75 and 80 pounds and will be a year old
in February.
My little Bailey was diagnosed with Demodectic mange
(non-contagious) last summer which is an auto-immune condition
commonly thought to be hereditary. So, the idea was to have her
spayed as close to her 6 month birthday as possible in order to keep
the Demodex under control. When that didn’t work as well as we
hoped, the vet put her on two rounds of antibiotics and finally
ended up giving her Ivemectin daily for several months. She appears
to be doing much better recently and I have a plan to manage her
stress and diet.
Bailey is very playful and loves going to work with me
everyday at Grandfather Home. She is a very sweet young Dane girl
who does well with the kids in one-on-one settings. In January 2006
Bailey began working on being a reading dog for the children at
Grandfather Academy.”
Be sure to check back soon for Bailey’s “adventures in
reading” on Rudy’s Kids pages! We’ll post visits to the classroom as
Bailey begins her work with the children.
